Technology media Axios released a data report from Chartbeat showing the devastating impact of Google's 'AI Overviews' feature on content publishers. As AI generates answers directly at the top of search results, user demand to click through to original websites has drastically declined. Small publishers with daily views between 1,000 and 10,000 have lost up to 60% of Google-referred traffic over two years. Medium publishers lost 47%, while large publishers saw a 22% decline.
Attempts to optimize for AI chatbots have yielded minimal results. Although traffic from AI chatbots increased over 200% year-on-year, it still accounts for less than 1% of total traffic. Most users redirected from AI summaries only verify accuracy rather than read content. The report concludes that Google search recommendation views fell 34% between 2025, fundamentally rewriting internet traffic distribution logic.
